We are a small group of community gardeners who live in zone 6B Danville Kentucky. Who wanted to grow fresh produce in our community. We formed a committee that started on Facebook to see what our options were.
You see, our little town has never had a community garden before. The community got excited about the idea and we took the next step of finding land in the middle of downtown so people could see the garden, visit often, and pick fresh produce when they want to for FREE.....
Community gardens offer unique opportunities for new residents and people who have lived in the community a long time.
Produce traditional crops otherwise unavailable locally;
Take advantage of the experience of elders to produce a significant amount of food for the household;
Provide inter-generational exposure to community traditions;
Offer a cultural exchange with other gardeners;
Learn about garden clubs, neighborhood groups, and other community information;
Community gardens offer neighborhoods an access point to non-English speaking communities;
Community gardens allow people from diverse backgrounds to work side-by-side on common goals without speaking the same language.
